ENGLAND, NORTH EAST

Overview: North East England has a impressive track record as one of the principal centres of economic activity in the UK, led by innovation and industrial evolution. The region’s solid manufacturing foundations are supported by emerging high-technology and knowledge intensive industries.

The major conurbations of Durham, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Sunderland each have vibrant business cores and many cultural attractions, yet all lie within minutes of some of the country’s most stunning countryside. The annual UK Competitiveness Index ranked Darlington and Durham in the top three locations for improving competitiveness in 2006-8.

An excellent track record of inward investment has resulted in over 500 leading global companies locating in the region. Leading-edge R&D is carried out at the North East’s five first-class universities: Durham University, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, University of Teesside and the University of Sunderland. Between them they have over 50 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise 2008) 5 and 5* rated departments, placing them in the top tier of national research facilities.

“The pioneering development opportunities with Cels combined with state-of-the-art facilities found at the International Business Centre, make the region seem like the ideal location to expand our operations into Europe.”
Mr Hu Yunlong, general manager, Nanjing Chuanbo Biotech and SAB UK
